“This year, they are JC Intal’s Blue Eagles”
Newspapers, columnists, students and more claim that about the Ateneo team this year since the departure of the Ateneo Blue Eagle’s star point guard, LA Tenorio.
I beg to differ.
After their first two games in the UAAP Season 69, the Ateneo Blue Eagles is not JC Intal’s team, but rather, it will be everyone’s team.
As much as it seems like JC Intal is the rightful heir to the “King Eagle” title left by Enrico Villanueva, Larry Fonacier, and LA Tenorio, I feel that Intal is too “weak” for the role.
Yes, Intal has dazzled spectators with his explosive first step, his gravity-defying dunks, and probably his one block a game last season, but those alone cannot fulfill the King Eagle status.
He may be co-captain this year, and led the Eagles during their first game against National University (NU) with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists, and 1 block, but he still lacks the leadership factor and the ability to take over a game to be King Eagle.
It’s still early to tell, but he somehow looks lost during their plays. I still often see him hanging around near the arc like a camper does in first-person shooting games, waiting for the ball to come to him instead of trying to get position to receive the ball and score easily.
He still emits an aura of “It’s just another game” rather than, “We have to win this one!” He still lacks that heart, that never-say-die attitude that Villanueva, Fonacier, and Tenorio had during their stints in the UAAP. Ateneo fans will remember Larry Fonacier’s breaking down into tears after the Blue Eagles bowed down to the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the finals. Fonacier was the only one left fighting as he dove for every ball, shot threes, made plays, and defended all five while the rest of the Eagles were dragging their feet. I cannot see JC Intal, in his current state, be that passionate in the game. A leader goes down fighting, but JC often gets frustrated when he’s doubled, or his shot does not fall most of the time.
It seems that he needs to push a button first (i.e. a dunk) before he turns into King Eagle. But it only lasts for a while, then he reverts back to normal mode as if his energy fluctuates from time to time.
People talk about game faces. If these were of any indication of the amount of passion a player is exerting in a game, then Intal will miserably fail. He often has a “We’re leading by 50 points” or a blank expression rather than a focused look calculating his next move.
Being toted as the King Eagle by everyone is probably hurting his play. He already has committed 10 turnovers in two games. The pressure has probably seeped into his nerves already, and Ateneo cannot afford a razzled JC Intal to be on the court. These turnovers might prove costly for the Blue Eagles in the future.
Actually, if I have to pick one right now, I will rather give it to Macky Escalona than JC intal. The evolution of Escalona simply has heart written all over it. Now that he is starting instead of being Tenorio’s sidekick, he brings down the ball with much oomph, barking or signaling out orders like a little general and makes that accurate pass for the basket. He is not the same Macky who gets pushed around and lives under LA’s shadow anymore.
I watched the game against the University of the Philippines (UP) earlier, and the look in his eyes says it all. He took care of the ball more, and his decisions were better this time around. Earlier, in a semi-fast break attack, Macky was left wide open inside the arc along the baseline. The old Macky would have taken the shot. However, the new Macky faked the shot and passed the ball to his teammate near the hoop for the easy two, and higher percentage shot.
When the UP threatened to blow the game wide during the first quarter earlier, Macky brought down the ball and led the attack, dishing out dimes to his teammates who easily converted their shots. If I remember correctly, he already had four assists near the end of the first. He finished with nine.
But no, I still will not give the title to Escalona. These two games have proven that these Blue Eagles are much different as the previous years. They do not have a “superstar” anymore. No more Villanuevas, Fonaciers and Tenorios to take over the game. The loss of Japeth Aguilar puts even more burden on Ateneo this year. The toted “the Future” of the Eagles, Aguilar flew to the United States in search for a stint in the NBA.
The Eagles are now 2-0 in the UAAP. It was not because someone has emerged as the new superstar of the Blue Eagles, but rather, it was because of the balanced attack they have been executing.
Everyone has suddenly become a threat.
The known “butterfingers” Doug Kramer is now emerging as a seemingly potent weapon as Rich Alvarez in his time sans the three point shot. He had 20 points earlier to go with 10 rebounds. Martin Quimson this year looked even stronger and more athletically fit than before. He scrambled for the ball in every possession, and is now turning to the “garbage man” of the Eagles, an ugly term, but fitting for his new breed of scrapiness. Hey, even Ateneo’s version of “Human Victory/Loss Cigar”, Rabeh Al-Hussaini is doing pretty good as well with a little extra on the boards. He had 8 points and 8 boards earlier.
Plus, their rookie, Eric Salamat, was astounding this time out. He was barely a presence in game one, but earlier against UP, he exploded for if I remember correctly, 17 points with 11-12 FT shooting, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. I can compare him to a young Topex Robinson of the Red Bull Barakos in the Philippine Basketball Association.
Everyone that was sent in earlier by Coach Norman Black, scored to win the game 98-89 against UP. And they didn’t even need JC Intal to lead the scoring.
Their new three guard lineup attack posed problems for the UP Fighting Maroons earlier. Jai Reyes, Macky Escalona, Yuri Escueta, Chris Tiu, Eric Salamat or Jai Reyes can compose this attack at one time. Anyone could bring down the ball, call the plays and lead the attack. This new Blue Eagles team could probably be faster than the previous teams. They ran on the fast break, and quickly came back and swarmed on defense more.
These new changes were not brought upon by JC alone, but by the whole team. The team is not dependent anymore on one Blue Eagle to take over and lead them to the promised land.
No King Eagle yet in this bunch, but this new batch may even be better than the Blue Eagle championship team before.
nice article! I find everything true and unbias but then i also think it’s too early to tell. JC may not have the sufficient conviction and passion, as what we see right now, to win but i do believe that soon enough he will. Norman Black gave him the position for a reason(who knows what that may be)and he, more than anyone is certain that JC deserves it. well… we’ll just have to wait and see. Animo Ateneo!

Thank you for the insightful comment, Julienne.
Yes, it is too early to tell. It’s still early in the season to scrutinize the play of JC Intal. I based my opinion mainly on the first two games and the past seasons he has played.
I really believe JC Intal has a lot of potential to shine like the King Eagles of yore.
I will revisit this article probably after the first round of the UAAP ends, then if need be, write another article about JC Intal or whom I believe should be the King Eagle.
Cheers!

cool! glad i found this site
well im really a huge fan of ateneo especially chris tiu i got season tickets and i usually go to gatherings where chris might be present! but im not a stalker! it just so happened.
anyhow maybe you could do a write-up on chris
he did a great job last game against Adamson. sadly i wasn’t able to watch live coz our dismissal’s 2:30 on thursdays and the venue is way too far from our school unlike when it was in the blue eagles gym last year, which is like beside MC. thanks you rock!

I couldn’t agree with you more! The heir to the King Eagle thrown hasn’t redeemed himself just yet. As far as what the team has showed in the past 5 games they’ve played, it is safe to claim that jc is ateneo’s main offensive guy, their first option in offense. Although he lacks consistency, coach Norman seems to believe as well as depend on jc’s offensive prowess.
Yet so far, Macky Escalona has been the difference. He was able to respond this early to his new role as ateneo’s primary play-maker.
He has been able to push the right buttons for his team and has provided intensity during crucial stretches of their games.
Players like Doug Kramer and Chris Tiu should also be commended as well. Ateneo would have lost 4 if not five game if it weren’t for these two. Doug has been averaging double-double while chris tiu has provided the spark ateneo need from their bench.
The thing is the spotlight has been aimed to both JC, and Macky. So far, JC has been the one who’s feeling most of the pressure in their first few games. Indeed JC seems frustrated with whenever he wasn’t able to connect with a basket thus, keeping him hesitant to fully take charge offensively and commit unforced errors instead. Macky, on the other hand, makes up for JC’s errors and keeps the balance within the team.
In my opinion, in order for JC to be more effective scorer and , he has to make perfect use of his versatility for in some occasions, he seems to be trying accomplish too much for the team. He needs to be patient to be able to read what the defense gives them.
As for the King Eagle Title, we have the whole second round and the Final Four to see the developments. As for now I agree with you, Milo, in picking Macky Escalona.
And as for JC, he has been showing something you would like to see from him if you are an Ateneo fan. It seems that JC is slowly but surely learning how to perform his role as a leader. In their previous game against UE, he was able to minimize his turnovers. Better yet, he was able to grab 8 rebounds, dish out 10 assist, aside from his 14 point output.
Pretty much, I’m very excited on how ateneo, would perform in the next round. I really don’t care if they wold lose few games and have bemish in their record. My concern, just like yours guys, is to see how these young cagers lead their team to the Final Four and hopefully, to the finals and win a championship!

Good day Aaron,
When I wrote this article, I found him as a weak heir to the throne. I agree with your points that he has to use his potential in his versatility in order to be effective.
However, as you pointed out in the UE Game, and recently, against UST, plus the consistency he has shown the past games, wow, maybe, just maybe he can take the title.
But so far, I’m seeing way more in the Ateneo team than just having someone hold the King Eagle title. By the way they are going, it seems like they are the King Eagles as anyone can lead the game for the Ateneans. Chris Tiu, Doug Kramer, JC Intal, Macky Escalona, and even their rookie Eric Salamat have led the Eagles at one time to seal the victory.
Let’s eagerly wait and see what the second round holds for this fine group of athletes.

from what transpired a while back in game2, it was jc who tried his mighty best to bring back the blue eagles into the game. the blue eagles were caught napping as ust registered 10 unanswered points at the start of the 2nd q. when coach norman black decided to send jc in, lo and behold, he instantly scored the first 7 (2 baskets and a trey, if i’m not mistaken) points of ateneo, and ended the 1st half with 16 points to his name.
but of course, no player will not get tired if he has to stand in for his teammates all throughout the game. playing for 37 basketball minutes is no joke. delivering a double-double performance on top of that is an even more difficult feat.
but like he’s said before, there are no superstars in ateneo’s current roster. ateneo has reached the finals because it has played as one cohesive team, with different players stepping up in each game. now the ‘cohesive team’ has somehow collapsed under pressure and in the midst of ust’s suffocating defense.
going back to game1, jc practically owned the 4th quarter which proved to be a tightly-fought one. pumping in 10 of his 21 points, with those 10 delivered to ateneo’s scorecard consecutively, jc has shown a lot of maturity, composure, and leadership this entire season 69. he may not be a true blue atenean (gs to college) like rico and larry, but i have no doubt about this guy’s heart and desire to clinch another championship for ateneo.
of course, jc can’t do it all alone. he needs all the help he can get from his teammates to whom he credits ateneo’s success in season 69. hopefully, the superstar-less ateneo team that plays ‘as a team’ will once gain show up on game3

your right j.c intal is the best among the player in that season i like j.c intal scoring, cause a lot of ateneo game in this season is the best among all the players.
when j.c intal not get the uaap mvp i ask myself what happening?
atleast nakuha naman nya yung pinakamagandang award ang player of the year hindi lang yun sa press pa galing ang award. kaya nga kahit hindi nagchampion ang ateneo maraming bumilib kay j.c kasi naman kaya nyang ibigay ang lahat biruin mo yung every game nyo e! always double figure ang score mo, kaya nga alam mo no.1 fan ako ng ateneo since 2001 kasi hanga ako sa kanila lalo na kay l.a tenorio pero mas humanga ako kay j.c kasi alam nyo hindi man nagchampion ang ateneo pero nakapasok sila sa final kahit halos lahat ng star player ng ateneo e! nawala na pero nagawa nilang pumasok sa final cause of j.c intal he gave his best for the team.

nice article..as what have you said, JC is an 1 on 1 player and might not fit the new system of the team..though this is his last year along with BIG DOUG (doug cramer) and MACKY, and so one question comes to my mind.. that is if the BLUE EAGLES can maintain theyre momentum next season..kahit siguro nagimprove si TIU (chris) di siguro kakayanin…kelangan nila ng big man, not only a big man but a big presens at the shaded area just like enrico..thats why JAPHET is a big lost…especialy it will only be his 3rdyear next season(am i correct??)..and that will be a complement to CHRIS’s and JAI’s outside shooting and penetration’s that will open the opportunity for the big guys to dominate the shaded area particularly JAPHET and AL HUSSAINI….but i just had read a news that JC is opting not to play in the PBL because he wants MACKY and DOUG to be one of his teamates..instead he is choosing to get a 2nd major at ateneo or to take the offer at the states..(as a semi pro baller)good luck ateneo!!!!!one big fight!!!!we almost got the TITLE we just lack one factor (a letigimate KING EAGLE)ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

JC stepped up his game last season and has shown his skill and prowess in the other amateur leagues which includes being recognized in the PBL and doing good job for the Harbour Centre Philippine Team in the SEABA Championship. the article is really a fearless forecast but to my mind, has been proven wrong by JC’s accomplishments. he still has much more potential to unveil and has a long way to go. He surely was last season’s ADMU King Eagle..^_^
